Hougang By-Election

"The WP has let down the voters of Hougang." - Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong

"The Workers' Party has not let the people down. Whatever is wrong, we've put it right." - MP for Aljunied GRC, Worker's Party Secretary-General Low Thia Khiang

"The Workers' Party needs to come clean with the people what information have they got about Mr Yaw and in particular, what did they know about him prior to the May election. And if they know, why did they field Mr Yaw. I think it is sad that the voters have been misled by the Workers Party." -  Minster for National Development, Khaw Boon Wan

After the expulsion of former Workers' Party Member of Parliament on 15 Feburary 2012, due to his alleged extramarital affair with another Workers' Party member, a by-election was held in Mr. Yaw's constituency, Hougang SMC (Single Member Constituency) to fill his vacant seat on 26 May 2012. Hougang SMC, which has long been a stronghold for the opposition Workers' Party was contested for by the WP's candidate Png Eng Huat and the People's Action Party's candidate, Desmond Choo. Mr. Png eventually beat Mr. Choo to retain Hougang SMC for the opposition.

A total of 29 speeches were made by the WP's members in 3 rallies, while 15 speeches were made by PAP members in 2 rallies.
